If you own a convertible with a fabric roof, it’s crucial to understand that this part of the car requires special care compared to the panels and wheels. It’s not simply a matter of washing the entire vehicle with the same product; each detailing product is specifically formulated for different areas. Therefore, it’s best to use dedicated detailing products for each individual section.
When caring for the convertible fabric roof on any vehicle, there are two essential products you'll need. The first is the Rag Top convertible fabric roof cleaner, a deep-cleaning shampoo that effectively removes embedded dirt, mold, and moss, revitalizing your fabric convertible cover. The second product is the Rag Top convertible fabric roof protector, a spray that creates a protective barrier for all types of fabric hoods, guarding against the elements and preventing road grime and dirt from becoming ingrained in the surface. Additionally, our Rag Top convertible fabric roof protector includes UV protection to help minimise colour fading.
However, before you even consider using these products, it’s essential to prepare your car first.
First, you should start with a thorough application of snow foam. Begin by jet washing your car to remove any loose debris and dirt, then attach your snow foam lance to the pressure washer to cover the entire vehicle in foam. Let the snow foam dwell for several minutes before rinsing it off to achieve the best results from the product.
Always work on a vehicle from top to bottom, so it's best to address the roof immediately after the snow foam treatment. Once you’ve thoroughly rinsed off any snow foam, take Auto Finesse Rag Top convertible fabric roof cleaner and a high-quality upholstery brush. While a sponge can be used, brushes will better agitate the solution and reach between the fabric fibres more effectively. Spray the cleaner generously across the fabric surface and use the upholstery brush or sponge to agitate the solution. Work in small sections to ensure the brush penetrates deeply into the fibres. Afterward, rinse the roof and continue washing the rest of the vehicle as usual.
After washing the entire car and ensuring it is clean, make sure the fabric roof is completely dry before applying the Rag Top convertible fabric roof protector.
At this stage, you should be nearing the end of your detailing process. Just spray a light, even mist over the fabric roof and allow it to dry. Once the first coat is dry, apply a second coat, followed by a third, ensuring each application is light. After applying all three coats, let them cure for about 2-3 hours. Ideally, the car should be sheltered from the elements to avoid any chance of rain.
And that’s it! You now know how to clean and protect your fabric convertible roof. If you have any questions about fabric care or anything else, feel free to email us at support@autofinesse.com.
