Keeping Your Leather In The Best Condition For Longer
The cold weather this time of year—especially here in the UK—can be a real challenge for your leather car interior. While it’s easy to assume that the summer sun is the biggest threat to luxurious, supple upholstery, it’s actually the drop in temperature that dries out leather, leaving it prone to cracking and more vulnerable to everyday wear and tear. Add winter’s abundance of grit and grime, which inevitably makes its way into your vehicle on clothing, and it’s clear why your leather may need some extra care. In fact, your leather may need cleaning, nourishing, extra protection. But all that can be achieved simply by using the best detailing products...

What Can I Use To Clean My Interior Leather?
Being a sensitive semi-porous material, Leather tends to hold onto grime deep within the hide. It's also good at picking up stains, body oils and dye transfer from your clothes. But just like other safe cleaning products designed other areas of your car, the main purpose of any leather cleaning product is to draw out this grime, break it down and encapsulate potentially harmful particles in the solution. This simply allows them to be wiped away safely, without touching the surface on a molecular level. Where leather differs slightly is that you'll want to avoid cleaning products that dry out the hide, potentially causing damage directly or leading to fading and cracking.
Our selection of water-based interior cleaning products, which includes Total Interior Cleaner, are all safe for use on leather. For extremely dirty, greasy leather you can also utilise a light dilution of Verso All Purpose Cleaner.. For regular details though it makes more sense to opt for a cleaning product specifically designed for the job. This is why we developed Hide Leather Cleanser.
This specialist leather cleaner is a mildly balanced, glycerine-based product specifically formulated to gently remove ingrained dirt from all types of leather. This solution is suitable for regular use but tough enough to penetrate the pores in the hide to remove grime, body oils and dye transfer. In this way Hide Cleanser is capable of intense deep-cleaning but without drying out the material, even on regular details.
Hide Cleanser safely cuts through contamination in the same way as our other surface-safe cleaning products, it's simply designed to best suited to all leather-trimmed interior surfaces.

Why Use A Leather Conditioner?
There’s often debate among skeptics about whether leather conditioners truly work, but the key lies in the question: what specific purpose are you expecting them to serve, and on what type of leather?
The reality is that a premium formula like our Hide Leather Conditioner works differently depending on the type of leather (and the treatments it underwent) before being incorporated into parts like seats or dashboards. So, what's important with regards to what a conditioner can do, is the type of leather you're working with.
In short though, for a good degree of protection (and nourishment on the right types of leather) using a premium leather conditioner is an essential step for keeping your leather in optimal condition for the long term.

Different Types Of Leather
The first thing to keep in mind is that not all leather is created equal. Understanding the type of leather in your vehicle is crucial, as it determines what a conditioner can realistically achieve and how it will perform.
Pigmented & Painted Leather
This is the most commonly used and cost-effective type of car leather. It’s typically painted or treated with an insoluble pigmented sealant to achieve its final color and finish, often referred to as "finished" leather. These leathers are comparatively durable, with good abrasion resistance and a reduced likelihood of drying out. The coating also masks imperfections in the original hide, making this type of leather an affordable option for manufacturers and consumers alike.
However, while this type of leather offers some protection, it’s not immune to damage. Harsh dirt and winter grime can still become ingrained, leading to damage to the pigment, paint, or leather itself. Once these contaminants take hold, they can be difficult to remove and may cause lasting harm.
Aniline Leather
Often referred to as Nappa or uncoated leather, this variety showcases the hide in its natural form. Commonly found in high-end or classic vehicles, aniline leather is exceptionally soft, displays the full grain, and is usually dyed with soluble dyes to achieve its color. Unlike finished leather, it has no protective coating.
The downside? Aniline leather is highly prone to scratches and stains, making added protection essential. Additionally, it requires careful maintenance to prevent it from drying out and cracking over time.
Semi-Aniline Leather
Used in many high-end modern vehicles, semi-aniline leather strikes a balance between the natural look and feel of aniline leather and the practicality of a thin protective coating. This coating doesn’t conceal imperfections, so only high-quality hides are used, but the leather retains much of its softness and character.
While semi-aniline leather offers more durability than uncoated varieties, it still needs extra protection to guard against heavy soiling, staining, and dye transfer from clothing. Proper care ensures it stays looking its best while maintaining its luxurious feel.

How Does The Type Of Leather Impact The Effectiveness Of Hide Conditioner?
While using the term "conditioner" might confuse those unfamiliar with the different types of leather in vehicle interiors, it’s important to remember that Hide Leather Conditioner is actually a dual-purpose product.
For aniline leather, it works by reintroducing essential oils to nourish and condition the hide from within, while also providing protection. On semi-aniline and pigmented or painted leathers, it acts more as a barrier cream, offering far more effective protection from the elements than the leather’s coating alone.
So, does Hide Leather Conditioner condition your upholstery in the traditional sense? Yes, for aniline leather. But for pigmented or coated leathers, it doesn't condition in the typical way—because those types of leather won’t absorb products due to their impermeable barriers. However, they still benefit from added protection against dirt and grime buildup.
Think of it this way: you wouldn’t clean your car without applying some form of protection, right? Hide Leather Conditioner—enriched with lanolin and wax—acts like a hard wax. It forms a breathable barrier that keeps grime suspended above the surface, preventing it from being absorbed into the leather and making it much easier to clean during routine maintenance.

Step 1 - Clean With Hide Leather Cleanser
For lightly soiled leather, simply spritz Hide Leather Cleaner onto a microfibre Work Cloth and wipe it over the surface. For heavier dirt, spray it directly onto the leather, agitate with an Upholstery Brush or Interior Detail Brush, then wipe away with a clean Work Cloth.
The goal is a natural satin finish—remember, shiny leather often means it’s dirty.
