How do detailing brushes help you clean?

Detailing brushes are designedpurely to help clean surfaces safely. Technically speaking, in most cases at least, it’s not the brush itself that does the cleaning by scrubbing (or mechanically cleaning) it’s simply there to aid your cleaning agents in their task of safe chemical cleaning.

Agitating a cleaning agent with a suitable detailing brush does two things. First it ensures that the cleaner makes contact with every area by spreading it around the surface and into any awkward nooks. And second, it ensures that the cleaning solution is refreshed when needed.

The cleaners we use for cars are typically surfactant-based cleaning agents. These special molecules are designed to clean safely by breaking away miniscule dirt particles from the surface, surrounding them in the solution, allowing them to be safely rinsed or wiped away without contacting the surface itself. It stands to reason then, that any volume of the solution can only surround and hold onto so much of these grime particles. By agitating the solution with your detailing brush you’re essentially moving away any ‘spent’ cleaner – or cleaner that’s full up with the maximum amount of grime – and moving in fresh solution to work on any remaining contamination. This is how a brush can make the most of your car cleaning products and helps cut down on wastage. Essentially, when you agitate with a detailing brush, you’re using all of the cleaning agent to its true potential.

What are they made of?

Detailing brushes come in all sorts of shapes and sizes depending on the task they’re intended to carry out. Obviously, there’s two parts to every brush – the cleaning head, or cleaning media, and the handle.

Now in terms of ergonomics, durability and ease of use the handle is important, and these are always designed to carry out the task in hand effectively and stand up to the rigours of day-to-day use. But what’s perhaps most crucial is the part of your brush designed to do the actual cleaning.

In most cases a detailing brush will have bristles and these can be made from synthetic material, or from a natural source such as hog hair. What’s most important about the bristles themselves is that they’re not only effective for the specified cleaning task, but they can achieve the desired result without damaging the surface underneath. Scratch-free bristles are the key to so many cleaning tasks in and around your car, but they also have to be able to stand up to repeated contact with not only grime, but powerful chemical cleaners, too.

The firmness of the bristles is another key consideration and what makes a particular brush suitable for a particular task. They have to be soft enough not to damage the surfaces you’re cleaning, but they have to be firm enough to agitate effectively and do the actual cleaning effectively. In this way, surface-safe cleaning all depends on exactly where you’re going to use them.

Soft detailing brushes are excellent for cleaning easily-damaged surfaces such as plastics and painted surfaces, while stiff brushes are ideal for drawing out heavy grime on surfaces that won’t be damaged quite easily, say your tyres or arch liners. The firmer the brush, the more the mechanical cleaning element comes into play.

Medium and medium-soft brushes tend to bridge the gap between the two. These are particularly useful on materials such as interior fabrics, leather and carpets because they will draw out the grime, but crucially without abrading the fibres in your upholstery.

That said, not all brushes are constructed with bristles. We also have detailing brushes (particularly for cleaning the most sensitive wheel finishes) that come with microfibre or lambswool heads. These work in the same way as your wash mitt, they pick up contamination as you pass over the surface, trapping potentially harmful grit and grime deep within the pile and away from the surface itself. In this way they’re more of a hybrid product than a traditional brush.

How do I choose the right size detailing brush?

An effective brush has to be able to make physical contact with every part of the area you’re trying to clean. Our Barrel Brush for example is a long brush that’s designed chiefly to get to the most awkward areas in your wheels, like behind the spokes and the inner barrels. But, aside from the clue in the name - a wheel brush is designed for use on wheels, an Upholstery Brush is for use on fabrics, and so on - it’s also important to consider the volume of the bristles themselves.

As you clean, the bristles will lift and hold encapsulated grime and loose particles away from the surface. This means that the more bristles, or the longer the bristles, the more grime they can hold safely. So, while longer bristles are handy for getting into all those nooks, they’re also even more useful for safe cleaning when there’s heavy, harmful contamination present. Can I use the same brush for all surfaces?

Again, there are brushes specifically designed for particular tasks such as wheels, tyres and interior fabrics, but there are plenty of all-purpose detailing brushes, too. But, with that said, it can be a good idea to use a dedicated brush for a particular task only, especially when it comes to heavy cleaning and harmful particles.

Dedicating one of these brush to a specific task is simply to prevent cross contamination when cleaning different areas. All you’re doing here is avoiding using the same brush on one part of the car that’s heavily contaminated and then moving onto and area that’s particularly sensitive. Just in case.
